Organic Waste Can Be Processed into Eco-Friendly Roof Materials
President Prabowo Subianto recently proposed that the public utilise palm fibre (ijuk) or sago palm leaves (rumbia) for roofing instead of zinc. In Bali, several other eco-friendly materials can also be processed for building roofs.
“Waste and agricultural residues can be processed into a mixture for roof tiles,” stated Ni Luh Kartini, an environmental expert from Udayana University, following a seminar in Kintamani on Sunday (2/8/2026).
Kartini noted that the type of waste in Bali suitable for this purpose is organic waste. Technology already exists in Bali to process organic waste and agricultural remains into a powder form. This powder can be utilised as an adhesive and coating for wooden or clay roof tiles.
“The challenge now is how to process organic waste. For example, how leaf waste can be turned into roofing, given that 65 per cent to 90 per cent of waste in Bali is organic,” said Kartini. She added that the material can be processed by melting it, drying it, and applying an adhesive until it is suitable for tile production.
Kartini mentioned that besides palm fibre, other natural materials such as bamboo and coconut leaves have long been used for roofing, though primarily for specific structures like shrines (pelinggih) or livestock pens. While bamboo weaves or leaves can be used for residential homes with wooden foundations, these natural materials require processing to be compatible with modern buildings made of lightweight concrete or bricks.
“I agree with President Prabowo’s idea. However, if we are to use palm fibre tiles, we must plant more sugar palm (aren) trees. A presidential instruction should be issued to facilitate this preparation,” she said.
Kartini observed that the majority of residents in Bali currently use asbestos, wood, or stone for roofing. She highlighted that the use of asbestos is particularly detrimental to health. “The safest option is standard clay tiles, but once they crack, they can no longer be utilised,” she concluded.
