Opposition to new education chief

PONTIANAK, West Kalimantan: Local university students staged a protest at the West Kalimantan' office of the Ministry of Education on Wednesday opposing the appointment of its new head, Antara reported.

Sjech Ahmaddin, who formerly served in Aceh, was recently appointed to the post by Jakarta in preference to five names proposed by the West Kalimantan administration.

The head of West Kalimantan chapter of the Indonesian Teachers Union, Gusti Samsumin, said he did not support Sjech's appointment either, questioning his professional qualifications. (01)
