Opposition Figure Maria Corina Machado Seeks Return to Venezuela

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado is still seeking to return to her country as soon as possible, despite her attempted return last week being called off, RIA Novosti reported on Wednesday (1/7), citing Bloomberg. Citing several United States officials, Machado had reportedly planned to return to Venezuela last week via the island of Curacao, but cancelled the trip after President Donald Trump’s administration signalled it did not support her return at that time. According to the report, the Trump administration conveyed its position to Dutch authorities, the Venezuelan government, and Machado’s team. Bloomberg also reported that Machado hired private security contractors to facilitate her return to Venezuela and provide protection while in the country. The security team had been deployed to Curacao to await her arrival. According to the report, Machado does not have a valid passport, making it impossible for her to enter Venezuela legally without permission from the government of interim President Delcy Rodriguez. Washington was reportedly concerned that Machado’s return could trigger a confrontation with the ruling government and divert attention from rescue efforts following a deadly earthquake that occurred on Wednesday. However, Bloomberg reported that Machado also received support from at least one senior official in the Trump administration. Machado remains interested in making a short visit to Venezuela, though it is unclear whether the plan is still feasible after last week’s aborted attempt.
