Opposition Figure Maria Corina Machado Seeks Return to Venezuela

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado is still striving to return to her country as soon as possible, even though her attempt to return last week was cancelled, RIA Novosti reported on Wednesday, citing Bloomberg.

Quoting several United States officials, Machado reportedly planned to return to Venezuela last week via the island of Curaçao, but cancelled the trip after the administration of US President Donald Trump signalled it did not support her return at that time. According to the report, the Trump administration communicated its position to the Dutch authorities, the Venezuelan government, and Machado’s team.

Bloomberg also reported that Machado has hired a private security contractor to facilitate her return to Venezuela and to provide protection while she is in the country. The security team has been stationed in Curaçao while awaiting her arrival.

According to the report, Machado does not possess a valid passport, meaning she cannot enter Venezuela legally without permission from the interim administration of President Delcy Rodriguez. Washington is reportedly concerned because Machado’s return is viewed as potentially triggering a confrontation with the ruling government and diverting attention from post-earthquake rescue efforts following a deadly earthquake on Wednesday.

However, Bloomberg reported that Machado also has the support of at least one senior official from the Trump administration. Machado remains interested in making a brief visit to Venezuela, though it remains unclear whether such a plan is still feasible following the cancellation of her attempt last week.
