Jakarta — Indonesia’s Opposition Coalition (BOI) has demanded that police arrest the perpetrator of an acid attack against human rights activist Andrie Yunus from Kontras within three days. Police should have no difficulty capturing the perpetrator.

“We are requesting that within three days from this incident, the perpetrator must be arrested and the primary motive revealed,” said BOI activist and Director of Lingkar Madani (LIMA), Ray Rangkuti.

BOI strongly condemned the acid attack on Andrie Yunus. The attack caused severe injuries to the victim’s body, face, and eyes, with approximately 24% of his body sustaining burns.

Within three days, police should be able to arrest the perpetrator and identify the intellectual actors behind the attack, as well as uncover the motive. This is feasible given that CCTV footage is available and there are at least four camera angles capturing the incident from different perspectives, which should provide police with sufficient leads to solve the crime.

“If police can detain numerous protest activists within hours in August 2025, it is difficult to believe they cannot arrest and uncover the motive behind this acid attack,” he stated.

BOI called on government officials, particularly those who have been human rights and democracy advocates, to firmly pressure police to arrest the perpetrator and investigate the motive. Officials were also urged to guarantee the right to free speech and safety for critical activists.

“As people who have been human rights and democracy advocates, these officials surely understand the threats and difficulties faced by those in critical groups. Therefore, after taking office, they should not allow the security and freedom of critical groups to be further eroded,” Ray Rangkuti explained.
