Opportunities for pedicab drivers

Opportunities for pedicab drivers

From Warta Kota

One of our activities in the Cilandak Study Workshop (SKB) of
the Ministry of National Education is to develop human potential
through extra curricular education.

With regard to our task and public discussion about the
problem of pedicab drivers in Jakarta, I would like to share the
following information to related parties over possible solutions
to the problem of pedicab drivers.

Based on our study regarding employment of pedicab drivers, we
have found that there are new job opportunities which are similar
in nature to their original profession or in line with their
interests, each of which can provide them with a better income.

1. By turning their pedicabs into waste-pressing machines
shredders/mixers, they could press waste at dumping grounds, or
make odorless fertilizer using bioactivators (completed within
two to seven days).

2. With proper skills and knowledge, they could turn sediments
from rivers or drains into bricks or paving blocks. They could
become barbers, drivers, conductors or traffic wardens. In
addition, there are 12 other appropriate professions that they
could take up.

3. These all would certainly have a positive impact and economize
on transport costs.

4. If the job described in point 1 absorbs five persons for each
dumping ground, a large number of pedicab drivers would be hired
in the 400 dumping grounds in the city. Besides improving the
quality of the environment and eradicating poverty, this could
serve as a model of how to overcome problems related to pedicab
drivers.

5. In consideration of the above, we would like to appeal to
government institutions, non-governmental organizations,
observers and other related parties to work together in dealing
with this problem.

Our contributions would be to:

a. Provide free design/technical formula and management.

b. Provide technical/educational staff.

c. Provide training funds and accommodation for a limited number
of participants in our workshop.
