Oppo tests square 100 MP selfie camera sensor for future phones
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Oppo is reportedly testing a 100 MP selfie camera sensor with a 1:1 aspect ratio, or square shape, for its future phones. For context, the front camera sensor with a 1:1 aspect ratio, which should be square, is similar to that introduced by Apple on the iPhone 17 series. According to a report by Gizmochina on Thursday (7/5) local time, Apple refers to this feature as “Center Stage,” which allows the camera to automatically frame shots in both vertical and horizontal orientations without needing to rotate the smartphone. Oppo appears to be taking a similar step to bring this innovation to its lineup of Android smartphones. This news first came from technology leaker Digital Chat Station (DCS), who revealed that a smartphone manufacturer is currently evaluating a square 1:1 front camera sensor with 100 MP resolution. This leak feels even more credible because it is not the first time Oppo has been reported to be working on square selfie camera technology. In February, the same source claimed that Huawei and Oppo are both paying attention to the 1:1 square sensor and considering it for future front cameras. The greatest advantage of the square selfie camera sensor is its flexibility. Traditional front cameras are usually optimised for vertical shots, meaning users need to rotate the phone horizontally to record selfie videos or wider group photos. The 1:1 square sensor changes that by capturing a larger image area. This technology is also highly compatible with AI features. It can support functions like automatic subject focusing and wider field-of-view adjustments to improve the quality of video calls, live broadcasts, and short-form content creation. All iPhone 17 models use a 24 MP square sensor. Oppo’s testing of a 100 MP solution should yield higher-resolution selfie photos and more detailed video recordings.
