OPM hostages

OPM hostages

From Tiras

The fate of the hostages, who have been held by separatists
for over eight weeks in Irian Jaya, is still unknown. Although
media reports say they are in good shape, no one can be sure of
their true physical condition.

The separatists movement has a three-fold demand: the
recognition of a free Papua; the termination of military
activities and transmigration to Irian Jaya; and the termination
of PT Freeport mining activities.

So far the military has made an effort to free the hostages
through persuasive means, but to no avail.

I wonder why the leader of the captors, Kelly Kwalik, is
reluctant to free the hostages. I hope the government becomes
more consistent in making decisions. It should take legal action
against the captors, and against any PT Freeport people who are
found guilty of violating the human rights of the local people.
