OPM Clashes with TNI in Maybrat, Two Soldiers Killed
The West Papua National Liberation Army-Free Papua Organisation (TPNPB-OPM) claimed involvement in a firefight with the Indonesian National Army (TNI) at a military post in Sori Village, Maybrat Regency, Southwest Papua. The clash between OPM and TNI occurred on Sunday, 22 March 2026.
TPNPB-OPM spokesperson Sebby Sambom stated that the attack resulted in casualties. “Two military personnel were killed and one other was critically injured,” he said in his statement on Monday, 23 March 2026.
The armed criminal group also claimed to have seized weapons taken from TNI soldiers during the firefight. Sebby said there were two long-barrelled rifles and various military logistics now brought to the OPM base in the Maybrat area. “The current situation following the attack on the military post has caused civilians to become fearful and evacuate again due to fears of retaliatory attacks or military operations in civilian settlements,” Sebby said.
The deaths of the two TNI soldiers in the clash with OPM in Maybrat were confirmed by the Commander of Korem 181/Praja Vira Tama, Brigadier General Slamet Riyadi. The two fatalities were from the naval branch, namely Marine Private AS and Marine Private ES.
Both victims have been evacuated to the Naval Hospital Dr. R. Oetojo in Sorong. Meanwhile, the soldier shot with the initials Marine Corporal ES remains in critical condition. “We extend our condolences for the fallen of the two TNI AL soldiers who were part of the Habema Operation Task Force while carrying out their duties for the state,” he said in his statement reported by Antara on Monday, 23 March 2026.
He stated that the TNI is now increasing security and strengthening intelligence functions following the attack incident at the TNI post in Maybrat. The TNI, according to Slamet, has mapped areas at risk of disruption by such armed criminal groups. “Additional troops are being planned, including intelligence strengthening. Information from the community and intelligence apparatus will continue to be developed,” said the one-star general.
