PT Atosim Lampung Pelayaran (ALP), the operator of the KM Mutiara Sentosa 2, has stated it will take full responsibility for the incident and provide insurance protection for the victims’ families and vehicles. Asep Suparman, Director of Operations and Commercial at PT ALP, conveyed the company’s apologies to all victims and the public at the KM Mutiara Sentosa II Passenger Handling Post. “We apologise to all parties for this disaster. The company is responsible for the incident, including providing insurance protection for the victims and affected vehicles,” he said in Surabaya on Wednesday (5/8). According to Asep, the management has insured the victims, vehicles, and those who lost their lives. When asked about the suspected cause of the fire on the KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2, he declined to comment and deferred the investigation to the relevant authorities. “The investigation by the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) is already underway. We cannot speculate; it is better to wait for the police’s conclusions,” Asep stressed. The KM Mutiara Sentosa 2 caught fire in the waters off Sumenep, Madura, on Sunday morning (2/8). The Ro-Ro vessel was sailing on the main Surabaya–Makassar route when the fire incident occurred mid-journey.
