San Francisco (ANTARA) - OpenAI announced on Tuesday (24/3) that it will shut down its generative artificial intelligence (AI)-based video creation application, Sora.

“We bid farewell to the Sora app,” the Sora team stated in a statement posted on the social media platform X.

The team thanked users who had created and shared content on the platform, stating that “what you created with Sora means a lot,” and acknowledged that the decision would disappoint many in the user community.

Sora, launched as a standalone app in September 2025, had been positioned as one of OpenAI’s flagship products in generative video.

OpenAI’s help centre materials up to March indicated ongoing updates to Sora’s features, including editing tools and support for newer Sora experiences, suggesting that this closure represents a significant shift in the company’s product direction.

In December 2025, OpenAI and The Walt Disney Company announced a three-year licensing agreement along with a $1 billion US investment (US$1 = Rp16,982) from Disney. Several media outlets reported that the deal would not be extended following the closure of Sora.

“As this relatively new field of AI develops rapidly, we respect OpenAI’s decision to exit the video creation business and redirect its priorities to other areas,” Disney stated on Tuesday.

Disney further indicated that it would “continue to engage with AI platforms to find new ways to reach fans where they are.”
