OpenAI Releases GPT-5.5, AI Model for Coding, Research, and More Accurate Data Analysis

OpenAI has released its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-5.5, for the ChatGPT chatbot on Wednesday (23/4/2026). GPT-5.5 arrives as the successor to GPT-5.4, which was introduced just last March. The company founded by Sam Altman claims this new AI model is the smartest and most intuitive it has ever created. In its statement, OpenAI emphasised that GPT-5.5 represents a major step towards an era of more “agentic” computing. This means AI is no longer just responding to commands but can plan, take actions, and complete complex tasks independently. The primary focus of GPT-5.5 is on agentic capabilities, particularly in coding, computer usage, and scientific research. In simple terms, GPT-5.5 can now understand user intentions more quickly and then perform most of the tasks autonomously. For example, this AI can conduct online research, fix complex code, and navigate between documents and spreadsheets without user intervention. Users only need to provide one major command, and the system will handle the rest. Compared to previous generations, GPT-5.5 is also more efficient. The model can complete tasks with fewer tokens while still producing better outputs. In terms of speed, OpenAI claims its performance remains on par with GPT-5.4, even as its intelligence level increases significantly. OpenAI has also introduced several model variants within the GPT-5.5 family. In ChatGPT, these include the standard GPT-5.5, GPT-5.5 Thinking, and GPT-5.5 Pro. The standard GPT-5.5 is positioned as a versatile model for various general needs, from daily work to professional tasks. Next, GPT-5.5 Thinking is designed to handle more complex tasks. Meanwhile, GPT-5.5 Pro is aimed at work with higher levels of difficulty.
