OpenAI Officially Launches GPT-5.6 AI Model Series

San Francisco (ANTARA) - American artificial intelligence (AI) company OpenAI announced on Thursday (9 July) that GPT-5.6, its latest series of AI models, is now generally available, following last month’s launch delay at the request of the US government over cybersecurity concerns.

The GPT-5.6 series comprises three models: Sol, the company’s new flagship model; Terra, a balanced model for everyday work; and Luna, the fastest and most cost-efficient model, OpenAI explained in a statement.

The company said GPT-5.6 Sol sets a new standard for intelligence and efficiency in coding, knowledge-based work, cybersecurity and science, whilst using fewer tokens and lowering usage costs compared with previous leading models and competitors’ models.

OpenAI also introduced two new capability options for the model range. The “max” setting gives GPT-5.6 more time to reason, check and revise its approach, whilst the “ultra” setting coordinates several agents in parallel to handle more complex tasks.

According to the company, GPT-5.6 became available on Thursday via the ChatGPT, Codex and OpenAI API platforms, with the global rollout expected to continue gradually over the next 24 hours.

OpenAI said GPT-5.6 was launched with its “most robust safety systems to date”. The company explained that although the models have improved capabilities over previous models in the areas of biology and cybersecurity, their capabilities have not crossed the “critical” threshold in either category under its preparedness framework.

OpenAI added that the models underwent the most extensive safety evaluations to date before being made publicly available.
