Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology are accelerating rapidly, with tech companies now preparing for the possibility of AI systems capable of self-improvement without human intervention.

OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has announced a job opening for AI security researchers with a substantial salary package. The role aims to help the company address potential risks from AI that can train its own versions.

The position, advertised by OpenAI’s Preparedness security team, offers an annual salary of $295,000 to $445,000 (approximately £235,000 to £356,000).

In the job description, OpenAI seeks candidates with strong technical skills to prepare for ‘recursive self-improvement’ – a scenario where AI develops superior versions of itself.

‘This job requires the ability to think about problems that may arise in the future but do not yet exist,’ OpenAI stated in the posting, cited from Business Insider on Monday, 25 May 2026.

‘It is crucial for those in this role to have sound judgment and well-thought-out strategies,’ it added.

The issue of self-training AI has gained significant attention in the tech industry, with rapid advancements from OpenAI and Anthropic prompting serious consideration of such possibilities.

Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has even stated that humanity is at the ‘foot of the singularity’, a term describing the moment AI begins improving itself and surpasses human intelligence.

OpenAI is reportedly pursuing ambitious goals to create automated AI research systems. CEO Sam Altman previously revealed plans to run an automated AI researcher internship using hundreds of thousands of chips by September, and aims to have ‘true automated AI researchers’ by March 2028.

‘We may completely fail to achieve this target,’ Altman wrote on X. ‘But given the extraordinary potential impact, we feel public interest requires transparency on this matter.’
