OpenAI: No New Developments Regarding Chip Partnership with Samsung

Jakarta (ANTARA) - OpenAI Korea stated on Friday that there is nothing new to announce beyond the ongoing partnership with Samsung Electronics Co.

This statement was made in response to reports suggesting that the US-based technology company might be collaborating with the South Korean chipmaker to develop next-generation semiconductors.

“Our reference regarding the expansion of cooperation with Samsung was presented in the context of Samsung Electronics’ decision to introduce ChatGPT and the letter of intent (LOI) announced last October,” said OpenAI Korea, as reported by Yonhap on Friday.

On Wednesday, several media reports suggested that OpenAI is deepening its cooperation with Samsung as the ChatGPT creator develops its own proprietary chips. Those reports cited statements made by OpenAI’s regional leadership during a press conference held on the same day.

“One of the areas experiencing the most significant progress and receiving the highest recognition with Samsung Electronics is the co-production and research of the next-generation chips we are developing,” said Kim Kyung-hoon, General Manager of OpenAI Korea, as quoted in the reports.

Kim’s remarks follow OpenAI’s June introduction of a specialised artificial intelligence (AI) chip designed in collaboration with Broadcom. The chip has been named Jalapeno.

Meanwhile, the OpenAI-Samsung LOI for 2025 includes the supply of advanced semiconductor solutions for OpenAI’s Stargate initiative. This project aims to build large-scale AI data centres across various regions in the United States.
