OpenAI Launches First Hardware, Codex Micro
AI research and deployment company OpenAI has officially entered the hardware business with the launch of Codex Micro, a smart keypad designed to make it easier for developers to control artificial intelligence (AI) agents on the Codex platform. The device was developed in collaboration with mechanical keyboard manufacturer Work Louder and is now available for pre-order. Codex Micro is a programmable macro keypad intended to accelerate user interaction with AI agents on the Codex platform. The device is equipped with 13 mechanical keys, including six Agent Keys that display the status of AI agents via colour indicators. Additionally, Codex Micro features a rotary dial that can be used to adjust the AI’s reasoning level, as well as a programmable joystick for executing workflows such as debugging or code refactoring. OpenAI includes 32 interchangeable keycaps, allowing users to customise shortcuts to their needs. The device supports Bluetooth and USB-C connectivity and is compatible with both Windows and macOS computers. According to OpenAI, Codex Micro is designed for users who rely on Codex in their daily work, especially after the platform evolved from a mere coding assistant into a broader AI-based productivity tool. Codex Micro is priced at 230 US dollars, or approximately Rp3.7 million. The launch of Codex Micro marks OpenAI’s first commercial hardware product. However, the device is distinct from a portable, screenless AI gadget that the company is reportedly still developing with start-up io Products, founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive.
