OpenAI introduces Dots, its latest cheerful and agile AI agent assistant
OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company, has recently introduced an avatar for its agentic AI assistant, designed to be cheerful and agile, named Dots.
Dots is a new entity powered by GPT-6 Astra and is described by OpenAI as a “highly capable, always-on agent, built to handle everything.”
According to a report from TechCrunch, unlike Codex or ChatGPT, Dots is designed to operate independently of specific hardware or interfaces, continuously pursuing user-defined goals in the background with minimal supervision.
Dots will be available starting Tuesday (29/9) in the ChatGPT application for users subscribed to Pro and Business Premium services in eligible markets. Users can also access Dots via Codex.
In its announcement, OpenAI envisions various ways Dots can be utilised. In one scenario, a software developer could use a specific dot to monitor customer feedback and implement requested bug fixes and features as needed.
OpenAI also envisions “specialist Dots” that undertake specific responsibilities. Each dot can be equipped with its own identity, credentials, and specialised tools through existing systems.
Most of these functions are already possible through Codex and similar agent-based software, but Dots integrates these features into a new package with a focus on independent agent actions.
As the name suggests, Dots appears as small, floating dots. This unique cartoonish aesthetic represents a visual shift for OpenAI’s software and is the latest attempt to make AI more approachable and easy to understand.
