OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has made a startling declaration about the future of artificial intelligence, stating that the world has now entered the ‘singularity’ era. This is the hypothetical moment when AI begins to surpass human intelligence and could potentially develop beyond human control.

Speaking on the Relentless podcast, Altman said, ‘We are now, like, in the era of singularity,’ describing a gradual shift driven by technological progress that he believes will be overwhelmingly positive. ‘I have been waiting for this moment my whole life, and I think it will be extraordinary, very positive, and great for the world,’ he added.

During the same podcast, Altman criticised other AI company leaders who consistently warn about the dangers of AI development. Although he did not mention names, his remarks appeared to target Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who has been vocal about AI risks. ‘I also think some of the future visions presented by other companies are quite scary. I will make sure that view is challenged and does not become reality,’ Altman stated.

In contrast, Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot, last month urged leading AI firms to establish a joint mechanism to temporarily halt the development of advanced AI systems. In a blog post on 4 June, the safety-focused AI lab argued that as AI becomes more sophisticated, the world would benefit from having the option to slow down or pause its development to prevent losing control.

Altman serves as the CEO of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, which currently dominates the consumer AI market with over 900 million weekly active users and approximately 50 million subscribers. Last year, Altman predicted that AI would surpass human intelligence in nearly every field by 2030.
