OpenAI CEO Defends ChatGPT Amid Claims It is Leading to Mass Layoffs
Recently, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has been actively defending ChatGPT, his company’s generative AI program, amidst a wave of layoffs in the technology industry.
The increasing adoption of AI in various industries is partly attributed to the emergence of ChatGPT at the end of 2022. Alongside this increased adoption, the future of human jobs is being called into question.
Ironically, many company executives have openly cited AI as a primary reason for these layoffs.
A notable example is the situation faced by engineers at King, the studio behind the mobile game Candy Crush. These engineers were tasked with developing an AI-powered level generation tool for the game.
Tragically, once this automated level creation project was completed, the engineers were immediately laid off, and their jobs were entirely replaced by the AI system they had created.
In response to these AI-related layoffs, Altman stated via his X account that ChatGPT and other OpenAI AI programs are not designed to replace humans.
“We want to build tools that empower and enhance human capabilities, not create entities that replace humans,” Altman wrote on X in early May.
The actions of King, the Candy Crush game developer, which replaced engineers with an AI system, serve as a concrete example supporting the belief that AI will take over human jobs.
Furthermore, concerns about AI are amplified by claims from AI company executives, such as Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic. Amodei has repeatedly made predictions that are unsettling for tech workers.
He predicts that humanity is only six months to a year away from an era where “all computer code will be written entirely by AI”.
In response to the wave of pessimism and public fear regarding job losses due to AI, Sam Altman provided further comments in a follow-up post on X.
According to the OpenAI CEO, widespread pessimism about job losses is considered a misguided view when viewed from a long-term perspective. Altman remains optimistic that AI will benefit humanity in the future.
However, Altman does not deny that this technology will trigger massive disruption.
He acknowledges that there will be a significant transition period as humanity shifts towards new types of jobs that may look very different from what we know today.
Furthermore, Altman paints a picture of an ideal future made possible by AI.
In his vision, people who are ambitious and driven to work hard will be provided with enjoyable things to do. On the other hand, he also promises a “relaxed” future for some. For those who do not want to work hard, they will no longer have to force themselves.
Through a civilization supported by AI technology, Altman claims that this group will still be able to enjoy an extraordinarily prosperous and comfortable standard of living.
