Open-trip Service Provider Named a Suspect in Connection with Deaths of Three Mount Dukono Climbers

For the act, the suspect is charged under Article 474 of Law Number 1 of 2023 of the Indonesian Criminal Code. The suspect faces a maximum prison sentence of five years. “One suspect named Reza Selang. He is the one who organised the open trip,” Pasaribu said. It is understood that the hiking party undertook the climb illegally when Mount Dukono erupted on Friday, 8 May, around 07:41 WIT. A total of 20 climbers were reported to be trapped, with 17 of them evacuated safely. Tragically, three climbers died on Mount Dukono. The SAR team initially found a climber from Jayapura about 50 metres from the crater rim on Saturday, 9 May. The other two climbers were later found dead on Sunday, 10 May. They were foreign nationals from Singapore: Heng Wen Qiang Timothy (30) and Shahin Muhrez Bin Abdul Hamid (27). Erlichson said there are indications of negligence in the deadly ascent case, given that the group climbed despite Mount Dukono having been closed since 17 April 2026.
