Jakarta (ANTARA) - The German automotive brand Opel is reportedly relocating part of its engineering operations to China while signalling the arrival of a new electric SUV in collaboration with the Chinese automaker Leapmotor.

As reported by ArenaEV on Sunday local time, Opel describes the model as a compact SUV or mid-sized SUV with higher ground clearance.

Previously, Opel announced the cutting of 650 engineering jobs at its headquarters in Rüsselsheim, Germany.

Although the platform and core technology originate from China, Opel’s design team in Germany ensures the model retains Opel’s distinctive identity.

The vehicle will feature the front fascia “Opel Vizor”, which appears as a smooth black panel with integrated LED lights. Its design is expected to be sporty with large wheels and short front and rear overhangs.

By utilising a Chinese platform, Opel can develop new electric vehicles more efficiently in terms of time and cost.

The latest SUV is said to have been developed in less than two years.

The Chinese-origin electric SUV has a length of 4,515 mm, positioning Opel’s model between the Opel Frontera and Opel Grandland.

The vehicle is designed as a practical family car with compact dimensions suitable for daily urban use.

With the largest battery, the car can travel approximately 434 kilometres on a single charge.

In addition to the pure electric version, a range extender variant will be available, using a small petrol engine to recharge the battery while driving, claiming a total range of up to 900 kilometres.
