Only 54% of Vehicles in Central Java Pay Tax, Arrears Reach Rp2.4 Trillion
The Head of the Regional Revenue Agency (Bapenda) of Central Java Province, Muhamad Masrofi, stated that currently only 54 per cent of taxpayers in Central Java are fulfilling their motor vehicle tax (PKB) payments. He noted that PKB arrears in Central Java have reached Rp2.4 trillion.
Masrofi explained that, based on a survey by Jasa Raharja, the level of PKB payment compliance in Central Java stands at 54 per cent. Central Java ranks below the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), which has a compliance rate of 68 per cent. “Meanwhile, other provinces are below Central Java,” he said during a press conference at his office in Semarang on Friday (18/09/2026).
However, Masrofi assessed that the 54 per cent compliance rate indicates that almost half of the taxpayers in Central Java have not yet fulfilled their PKB payment obligations. “This fifty-four per cent means that almost half are not paying tax,” he remarked.
He explained that there are currently 17 million motor vehicles in Central Java, 80 per cent of which are two-wheeled vehicles. Out of these 17 million vehicles, only about 11 million are actively paying PKB.
“Our tax arrears are high. For Central Java Province, it has reached Rp2.4 trillion,” said Masrofi, adding that this figure was the result of an audit by the Audit Board of Indonesia (BPK) in 2025.
According to him, this is also the reason why the Central Java Provincial Government is providing relaxation in the form of motor vehicle tax penalty waivers. He hopes that this policy can encourage taxpayers to fulfil their PKB obligations.
“Because whatever tax revenue is generated from the community will be returned to the community through developments in Central Java, such as infrastructure, education, health, and so on,” said Masrofi.
“Without tax payments from the community, these initiatives certainly cannot be implemented to their full potential,” Masrofi added.
