Only 2.2% of MSMEs Access Bank Credit, AI Seen as Solution
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — MDI Ventures, the venture capital arm of PT Telkom Indonesia Tbk (TKM), has released a new white paper titled Catalyzing Digital Resilience and Sustainable Growth: Advancing Inclusive Innovation and AI-Driven Impact Across Indonesia’s Digital Economy.
The report maps the role of venture capital, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital infrastructure in driving Indonesia’s digital economic growth.
According to the report, 65 million micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia contribute 60.5% to the gross domestic product (GDP) and absorb 96.5% of the national workforce.
However, behind this growth, the MSME funding gap remains a major challenge as financing needs far exceed current access.
MDI Ventures director Roby Roediyanto stated that the white paper reflects the company’s role as a bridge between innovation and community needs.
‘Our latest white paper reflects MDI Ventures’ role as an enabler connecting innovation with real community needs. This is evident in our portfolios in AI, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure, which deliver concrete solutions to various challenges,’ Roediyanto said in a press release on Monday, 25 May 2026.
‘Through this approach, we see that technology not only creates economic value but also measurable social and environmental impact,’ he added.
MDI Ventures considers impact investing a key solution for Indonesia’s development financing needs.
Globally, impact investing has reached $1.571 trillion in assets under management (AUM), growing at 21% annually since 2019.
In this context, corporate venture capital is said to play a strategic role in connecting capital to high-impact sectors.
The white paper also highlights the limited access to formal financing for small businesses. In 2023, only 2.2% of micro and small enterprises accessed bank loans.
MDI Ventures suggests approaches such as alternative data-based credit scoring to expand credit access, including those utilised by Amartha’s Ascore.ai.
