A crowd of online motorbike drivers (ojol) held a demonstration protesting the quick response code (QR code)-based gate system at Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad). Unpad provided clarification. The ojol crowd staged an action at the Jatinangor campus in Sumedang, West Java, on Tuesday (31/3/2026). Head of Unpad’s Public Communication Office, Dandi Supriadi, explained that the system has been implemented through the Saunpad application to enhance security, order, and vehicle access control on campus. “The initial aim of this system is to improve security. Through this system, the academic community scans the QR code to enter and exit the campus as part of access management,” said Dandi in Sumedang on Tuesday, as reported by Antara. He added that visitors without app access can still enter through Gate C by reporting to security personnel, and this policy applies to various parties, including ojol drivers, couriers, guests, and alumni. However, the access regulation has raised objections from ojol drivers as it is seen to extend the travel distance to pick-up and drop-off points within the campus. In response, Unpad has opened additional temporary access through Gate D or the Makalangan Monument Gate for the next five days, while awaiting the evaluation process and formulation of solutions. “Unpad will also invite representatives of online motorbike drivers for a hearing to find the best solution,” said Dandi. On the other hand, traffic engineering efforts in the Jatinangor area are also being carried out by the Transportation Agency, including the closure of the roundabout at the old Pangdam site, which has drawn attention from ojol riders. The agency considers the policy necessary because the spot is frequently a location for traffic violations due to riders cutting through traffic flow, which has the potential to cause accidents. As a follow-up to the on-ground dynamics, access at that location has been temporarily reopened for joint evaluation with relevant parties. Unpad hopes that within the next five days, a policy can be obtained that still maintains security and order while accommodating the mobility needs of ojol drivers.
