Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Cyber Crime Directorate of the Indonesian National Police (Bareskrim Polri) stated that online gambling networks are leveraging technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), to evade website blocking and disguise the flow of criminal proceeds.

Brigadier General Adex Yudiswan, Director of Cyber Crime at Bareskrim Polri, noted that technological developments enable perpetrators to quickly replace websites and bank accounts used for online gambling operations.

“The concept between demand and the market is almost the same. While other crimes might be committed out of necessity, in gambling, they are the ones actively seeking it. Therefore, if demand is high, there will certainly be parties looking to exploit it,” Adex said during a press conference regarding the exposure of online gambling cases in Jakarta on Thursday.

According to him, perpetrators use technology to create nominee accounts and implement layering patterns to disguise the flow of funds. This technology is also used to accelerate the formation of new sites once previous ones have been blocked.

“So, when a website account is blocked, they will quickly form a new one. When a personal bank account is closed, they have already moved to another account,” he said.

Adex explained that these practices are becoming increasingly difficult to handle because online gambling is borderless. Perpetrators can place different parts of their operations in various countries, ranging from marketing activities to website management.

“We also wish to convey that in the cyber world, especially online gambling, it is borderless. Marketing might be located in one country, such as Cambodia, while the website managers could be in China, and other parts in different countries,” he added.

This condition, according to Adex, requires cross-border collaboration, involving various ministries, agencies, and law enforcement officials to uncover online gambling networks.

He stated that technology is also being used by perpetrators to replace manual account management with bot systems or AI. This pattern allows criminals to move swiftly when the digital infrastructure or accounts used are targeted by authorities.

“Therefore, the concept of online gambling, as we have stated from the beginning, is not a concept of gaming, but a concept of fraud,” said Adex.

Adex ensured that the Cyber Crime Directorate of Bareskrim Polri continues to use technology to uncover online gambling networks, including tracing the accounts and fund flows used by perpetrators.

“This is certainly what makes the process somewhat difficult, thus requiring collaboration between countries, between ministries and agencies, and also between law enforcement agencies,” he said.

He emphasised that handling online gambling does not stop at blocking websites, but is also directed towards uncovering the networks and operational patterns behind these activities.
