Online gambling content distributors target platform users with high interaction
A senior official from the cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has stated that distributors of online gambling content are exploiting trending topics and digital platforms with high interaction rates to reach a large number of internet users. “Online gambling is one of many themes exploited by criminals to lure users into sharing personal information, downloading malicious files, or conducting financial transactions,” said Defi Nofitra, Kaspersky’s Country Manager for Indonesia, on Monday.
He added that beyond gambling operators, other cybercriminals such as online fraudsters also utilise popular content and digital platforms to spread phishing links, fake websites, and counterfeit mobile applications to reach their targets. Defi noted that the high level of digital activity in society makes Indonesia an attractive target for cybercriminals.
Therefore, he argued, efforts beyond simply blocking content are needed to address the rising threat of crime in the digital space. “This issue should not be viewed solely as a law enforcement challenge. It is equally a matter of digital trust and cybersecurity,” he said.
He explained that while technology can help detect and block malicious activities on digital platforms, it cannot fully replace the role of users with high digital literacy. Defi emphasised the importance of improving public digital literacy as a crucial measure to reduce the risk of exposure to cyber threats. “Cybercriminals will always follow where users are most active. As digital platforms continue to evolve, strengthening digital resilience, not only through technology but also through awareness, becomes increasingly important,” he concluded.
