Online Gambling Cases Still Rampant, OJK Evaluates Gaps That Must Be Addressed
Online gambling cases in Indonesia continue to rise over time amid the rapid currents of technology and digitalisation. The Financial Services Authority (OJK) believes there are gaps that must be addressed, including tackling the issue of data exchange between government agencies that is not yet real-time.
“One thing that is indeed the most important question for us now is why reports of accounts used for online gambling keep increasing, so the question arises for us, it seems there are critical points that we must fix, how we can improve the eradication of online gambling going forward,” said OJK’s Chief Executive of Banking Supervision Dian Ediana Rae at the OJK Banking Forum 2026 event titled “Strengthening Banking Information Technology Governance and Enhancing Efforts to Eradicate Financial Crime and Online Gambling in the Digital Era” at the Bank Indonesia Office Complex, Jakarta, Tuesday (14/7/2026).
According to OJK records, as of May 2026, there were 2.8 million rejections of business relationships with prospective customers, 51,200 terminations of business relationships with customers indicated to be linked to online gambling, and 32,454 accounts blocked after undergoing an enhanced due diligence process.
Furthermore, the banking industry reported a 260.03 percent increase in suspicious financial transaction reports with indications of predicate crimes related to gambling in 2025.
In line with this, the handling of content and the termination of access to various digital platforms continue in an effort to eradicate online gambling. The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs recorded that as of July 2026, it had handled more than 6.7 million pieces of content containing online gambling across various digital platforms.
Dian emphasised that the OJK, together with all relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, the banking industry, and other parties, will continue to synergise in tackling various types of financial crime and online gambling that harm the public or consumers. To take optimal steps, the OJK is conducting a number of evaluations to take more strategic next steps. This is because perpetrators of financial crime and online gambling are becoming increasingly cunning in their criminal activities, so existing gaps must be addressed.
