One Year On, Sekolah Rakyat Becomes a Safe Space Free from Bullying
Sekolah Rakyat has been operational for one year, establishing itself as an institution that strictly rejects bullying. This anti-bullying stance was emphasised by the Minister of Social Affairs, Saifullah Yusuf (Gus Ipul), during a briefing for educators at Sekolah Rakyat, including headmasters, dormitory wardens, and foster parents from across Indonesia. The briefing was conducted via a hybrid Zoom meeting at the Ministry of Social Affairs headquarters in Central Jakarta on Tuesday (2/9/2025).
In his address, Gus Ipul emphasised three prohibited occurrences in the educational sphere, which he termed the “three major sins of education.”
“I am entrusting all headmasters, dormitory wardens, and foster parents with this. First, there must be no bullying from anyone towards anyone. Second, there shall be no physical or sexual violence. Third, there must be no intolerance. If there are any signs, report them immediately, follow up immediately, and let us find solutions promptly; do not take them lightly,” he asserted.
Gus Ipul also reminded educators to perform their roles with empathy, patience, and exemplary conduct. He noted that as Sekolah Rakyat is still in its pioneering stage, various challenges are inevitable.
“I want all of you to work with heart, strengthen your resolve, improve your capabilities, and most importantly, be patient. Because this is still a pilot programme, many problems will arise. Let us resolve these issues through patience, collaboration, coordination, discipline, and deliberation,” said Gus Ipul.
During the session, several educators shared their views and hopes. Silva, a foster parent from SRMP 28 Pasuruan, highlighted the challenges regarding supervision. “Currently, the number of foster parents in Pasuruan is still limited, while there are 50 students,” she noted.
Responding to this, Gus Ipul stated that all feedback had been recorded and would be addressed gradually. “All shortages in human resources and infrastructure will be fulfilled in stages. Please be patient. As the person in charge of the operational aspects of Sekolah Rakyat, I am fighting with all my strength to ensure that all your rights are met. We are also arranging working hours to be better. Do not worry, salaries and allowances will certainly be received in accordance with the regulations,” he said.
Gus Ipul concluded his address with a message that dormitory wardens and foster parents are not merely supervisors, but substitutes for family figures within the school. He stated that Sekolah Rakyat should serve as a second home for students. He urged educators not to let children feel alone, ensuring they feel loved and cared for rather than merely housed. Foster parents and wardens must serve with love, exemplary leadership, and patience.
