Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung and Deputy Governor Rano Karno have outlined the achievements of their first year in office, revealing that 21 new green open spaces have been built during their tenure.

"Under our leadership, we have now completed 21 large new green open spaces. The smaller ones are actually very numerous. This one, Taman Bendera Pusaka, is a green open space that we have consolidated," said Pramono in his address at the 'One Year of Building Jakarta From the Ground Up' event at Taman Bendera Pusaka, South Jakarta, on Friday.

"This site covers 5.6 hectares and will feature a 1.2-kilometre jogging track. I am confident this will benefit Jakarta's residents. Furthermore, I and Deputy Governor Rano Karno have repeatedly stated that we will complete programmes left unfinished by previous governors," he added.

Pramono explained that several new hospitals would be constructed. Jakarta currently has 31 hospitals, 44 district-level community health centres, and 292 sub-district auxiliary health centres.

"We will build two more hospitals. The first is Royal Batavia Hospital in Cakung, and the second will be located on the former Sumber Waras site," he said.

Pramono further noted that Jakarta had become the first province to ban the consumption of dog and cat meat.

"Jakarta is the pioneer — the only province to have enacted a ban on the consumption of dog and cat meat. As most other provinces have yet to do so, Jakarta has led the way," he said.

The governor also highlighted Jakarta's improved social cohesion through the promotion of diversity and harmony. He cited examples such as 'Jakarta Bersalawat' and the inauguration of a commemorative gathering (haul) for prominent Betawi Islamic scholars held at Ancol.

"I have even permitted Jakmania to hold shalawat gatherings at Ancol, the Madurese community to hold shalawat at Ancol, and I have now initiated what will be a haul for the great Betawi scholars, organised by the DKI Jakarta regional government as a form of respect for the prominent Betawi scholars of Jakarta," he explained.

In addition, Pramono said Jakarta had staged a Christmas Carol event during last year's festive season and a Lunar New Year celebration held in the lead-up to Ramadan.

"We held what was called a Colossal Christmas Carol. For the first time, 1,500 people sang at the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, and it proceeded smoothly and peacefully. The Lunar New Year celebration also went well," he said.

"What made me happiest was that as we entered the holy month of Ramadan, the transition from the Lunar New Year to Ramadan demonstrated Jakarta setting an extraordinary example," he concluded.
