One-Way System Opens in Puncak, Unleashing Flood of Vehicles
The return flow of tourists from the Puncak region, Bogor, West Java, experienced a total standstill on Saturday afternoon. Thousands of vehicles travelling from the direction of Cianjur towards Bogor and Jakarta were held up for several hours in the Riung Gunung to Gunung Mas area.
This situation occurred due to the implementation of a one-way system from Jakarta towards Puncak, which had been enforced by the police since the morning. Consequently, vehicles from the opposite direction were unable to pass, resulting in long queues.
Based on field observations, the queue of vehicles from the direction of Cianjur stretched long, filling the entire width of the road. From the Puncak hills, thousands of cars and motorcycles could be seen crowding the lanes, barely moving at all.
Police officers only began to alleviate the congestion by opening the one-way route from the direction of Cianjur towards Jakarta at exactly 15:00 WIB. This reopening was carried out after the volume of vehicles travelling from Jakarta towards the Puncak tourist area began to show a decrease.
Several drivers reported having to wait for up to four hours inside their vehicles before they could continue their journeys. Although the route towards Jakarta has been reopened, traffic density is expected to persist until late evening, given the high volume of tourists leaving the Puncak area simultaneously.
Police continue to manage traffic at congestion-prone points to ensure that the flow remains steady, albeit at limited speeds. Vehicle volume on the Puncak-Bogor route increased by 5% during the school holidays, prompting police to implement the one-way system to ease congestion in Gadog.
Vehicles travelling the Puncak-Cianjur route are dominated by tourists concluding their long holidays coinciding with the weekend. The Cianjur Police have deployed 56 personnel and traffic congestion relief teams along the Puncak-Cianjur route to anticipate high traffic volumes during the May 2026 long holiday period.
Traffic engineering, specifically contraflow, was implemented on the Jagorawi Toll Road towards Puncak at the discretion of the police. One of the contributing factors to the congestion in Puncak, Bogor, during holidays is the chaotic operation of public minivans (angkot).
