One Toll Gate, Two Worlds: Sawangan Kubro vs Sawangan Sugro

Sawangan Kubro vs Sawangan Sugro has become a popular term on social media to depict the contrasting faces of the roads in the Sawangan area of Depok. This division typically refers to the direction when exiting the Depok-Antasari Toll Road via the Sawangan toll gate. If vehicles exit the toll and turn right towards Parung Bingung, drivers enter the corridor known as “Sawangan Kubro”. Meanwhile, turning left towards DTC or Mampang leads to the area called “Sawangan Sugro”. It is not yet known for certain who first used the term. However, it frequently appears in netizens’ conversations, particularly to describe the contrasting congestion conditions in the two road directions. Netizens use the term not to refer to administrative area sizes, but to road conditions, especially traffic jams. “Kubro” is used to describe the section of Jalan Raya Sawangan that is more congested and crowded. Sawangan Kubro includes Jalan Raya Sawangan, the junction at Jalan Raya Keadilan towards Rangkapan Jaya, the Parung Bingung junction, Jalan Raya Mucthar, up to the Tugu Batu area, the Pengasinan traffic light, and the Bojongsari junction. This area is indeed notorious for its traffic jams, especially at points like Parung Bingung and Tugu Batu. Meanwhile, “Sugro” refers to the route with relatively lighter congestion compared to Kubro. Sawangan Sugro includes Jalan Raya Sawangan towards Depok Lama, the Mampang intersection, the Tanah Baru junction, up to Jalan Dewi Sartika in Depok Lama. Even though it is called Sugro, this area is not free of traffic jams. Congestion also occurs here, but not as severe as in Sawangan Kubro.
