One Sigi Resident Killed in M6.7 Earthquake Near Palu

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has reported that one resident of Sigi Regency died as a result of a magnitude 6.7 earthquake that shook Palu, Central Sulawesi. Data collection on the quake’s impact is still ongoing. “The reported fatality came from Sigi Regency, which is also the area with the most significant impact,” said Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Data, Information and Communication Centre for Disasters, in a statement on Tuesday (16/6/2026). The BNPB recorded that approximately 110 families, or 312 individuals, were affected by the earthquake in Palu. A total of 25 residents sustained minor injuries and 13 residents suffered serious injuries. In Sigi, earthquake victims were recorded at around 89 families or 272 individuals. Additionally, 22 residents sustained minor injuries and 13 residents suffered serious injuries. Meanwhile, Parigi Moutong Regency recorded around 21 families or 40 individuals affected. “In Palu City, two residents sustained minor injuries, while in Poso Regency one resident was injured and further data collection is still underway,” he said. Building damage from the earthquake has also increased. Preliminary data recorded at least 67 housing units affected. Of that number, 26 units suffered minor damage, six units moderate damage, and 12 units severe damage. Besides residential homes, damage also occurred to six places of worship, two bridges, one public facility, two office buildings, three business premises, and one provincial road section connecting Palu-Sigi-Poso which collapsed. “The most reported damage is in Sigi Regency, with 47 housing units affected, 23 homes with minor damage, six homes with moderate damage, and 12 homes with severe damage. In this area, six places of worship were also affected, two office buildings affected, one bridge affected, and one micro-enterprise unit suffered damage,” he explained. Aftershock activity was still occurring into the afternoon. The BNPB, together with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and local governments, continues to monitor the situation and urges the public to remain calm, not be easily influenced by unverified information, and follow official information from the government and BMKG. “The BNPB will continue monitoring and provide periodic updates on the handling of the earthquake’s impact in Central Sulawesi as the data collection and field response processes progress,” he added.
