One Sigi Resident Killed in M6.7 Earthquake Near Palu

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has reported that one resident of Sigi Regency has died following a magnitude (M) 6.7 earthquake that shook Palu, Central Sulawesi. The process of assessing the full impact of the earthquake is currently ongoing.

“The deceased victim is reported to be from Sigi Regency, which is also the area experiencing the most significant impact,” said the Head of the BNPB Centre for Data, Information, and Disaster Communication, Abdul Muhari, in a statement on Tuesday (16/06/2026).

BNPB noted that approximately 110 households, or 312 individuals, have been affected by the earthquake in Palu. Around 25 residents sustained minor injuries, while 13 suffered serious injuries.

In Sigi Regency, the earthquake affected approximately 89 households, or 272 individuals, with 22 residents sustaining minor injuries and 13 suffering serious injuries. Meanwhile, Parigi Moutong Regency recorded approximately 21 households, or 40 individuals, as being affected.

“In Palu City, two residents sustained minor injuries, while in Poso Regency, one resident was injured and is still undergoing further assessment,” he added.

Damage to buildings following the earthquake has also increased. Preliminary data shows that at least 67 houses have been affected. Of these, 26 units sustained minor damage, six units sustained moderate damage, and 12 units sustained heavy damage.

In addition to residential homes, damage occurred to six places of worship, two bridges, one public facility, two office buildings, three business premises, and one section of the provincial road connecting Palu, Sigi, and Poso, which has collapsed.

“The most extensive damage was reported in Sigi Regency, with 47 houses affected: 23 with minor damage, six with moderate damage, and 12 with heavy damage. This area also recorded six affected places of worship, two affected office buildings, one affected bridge, and one affected MSME unit,” he explained.

As is known, aftershock activity continued until this afternoon. The BNPB, alongside the BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency) and local governments, continues to monitor the situation and urges the public to remain calm, avoid unverified information, and follow official updates from the government and BMKG.

“BNPB will continue to monitor and provide regular updates on the earthquake impact response in Central Sulawesi as the data collection and field handling processes proceed,” he concluded.
