One Resident Dies in Pejompongan Overnight, Police Assist Evacuation

Police received a report of a resident dying during unrest in Pejompongan, Jakarta, yesterday. The police assisted with the evacuation after receiving the report.

“It began with information from the public to the police. We knew that unrest was still occurring at the location, so the Indonesian National Police had to assess and calculate whether the evacuation would be safe for the officers carrying it out,” said Polda Metro Jaya Head of Public Relations, Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto, to reporters on Friday (28/8/2026).

Once the location was secure, Budi said, the Polda Metro Medical and Health Division evacuated the victim, who was already unconscious at the time. Unfortunately, the victim was pronounced dead while being treated by doctors at the Indonesian Navy’s Mintohardjo Hospital.

“So once the location had been secured, the Polda Metro Jaya Medical and Health Division evacuated a man who was in an unconscious condition. The nearest hospital was Mintohardjo Hospital; he was taken to the hospital, but during treatment at the hospital the person concerned passed away,” he said.

At 11.30 p.m. Western Indonesia Time, the victim was taken to the Indonesian National Police Hospital in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta, for identification. The family refused to allow an autopsy to be performed on the victim.

“After identification was carried out and the post-mortem examination was conducted this morning, we also met with the family of the deceased. The biological child of the person concerned was not willing for an autopsy to be performed. We still submitted a request for an autopsy to be carried out to determine the cause of death. This was also refused by the family, and they have issued a written statement,” he explained.

Budi added that police have not yet been able to take statements from the victim’s family because they are still in mourning. Police stressed that this incident serves as a lesson for all parties to create safe spaces during demonstrations.

“We are still considering one side, empathy, and the other side, the family’s grief, so investigators have not yet been able to request further information. But this incident is a lesson for all of us that creating a safe space is not only for those expressing their aspirations; there are other members of the public who must be protected, and their dignity, lives and safety must be safeguarded,” he said.
