One-Hour Energy Saving Action in Jakarta Cuts Carbon Emissions by 60.14 Tonnes

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government recorded that a one-hour energy saving and carbon emission reduction action to commemorate Environment Day 2026 on Saturday (13/6/2026) successfully lowered carbon emissions by 60.14 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. Head of the DKI Jakarta Environment Agency, Dudi Gardesi, stated that the 60-minute lights-out action proved that simple steps taken collectively can have a real impact on the environment.

"The 60-minute lights-out is not merely a symbol, but also a reminder that simple steps taken together can have a real impact on the environment. From small habits, we can create big changes for a healthier and more sustainable Jakarta," Dudi said in Jakarta on Sunday (14/6/2026).

According to Dudi, the action aimed to promote a culture of energy saving while encouraging public participation in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The activity is also part of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government’s commitment to supporting climate change control and low-carbon development.

Based on data from the PLN Greater Jakarta Distribution Unit (PLN Disjaya), the lights-out event, which took place from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Western Indonesian Time, also saved 75.18 MWh of electricity consumption and reduced electricity costs by up to Rp 108,693,752.

"The implementation of this activity refers to Governor’s Instruction Number 14 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Lights-Out for Energy Saving and Carbon Emission Reduction, which is carried out periodically in Jakarta," Dudi said. He assessed that this achievement shows that changes in energy use behaviour can produce measurable impacts if carried out consistently and involve many parties.
