One-hour energy-saving action helps reduce 60 tonnes of carbon emissions
The Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta stated that the energy-saving and carbon emission reduction action for one hour, in commemoration of World Environment Day 2026 on Saturday (13/6), succeeded in lowering carbon emissions by 60.14 tonnes of CO2e.
Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency Dudi Gardesi said in Jakarta on Sunday that the 60-minute blackout was not merely a symbol, but also a reminder that simple steps taken together can have a real impact on the environment. From small habits, we can create big changes for a healthier and more sustainable Jakarta.
Dudi said the action aimed to promote a culture of energy saving while inviting the public to participate in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The activity is part of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government’s efforts to support climate change control and low-carbon development.
The implementation of the activity refers to Governor’s Instruction Number 14 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Blackouts for Energy Saving and Carbon Emission Reduction, which is carried out periodically in Jakarta.
According to him, the emission reduction achievement shows that behavioural changes in energy use can produce measurable impacts if carried out consistently and involve many parties. This success was born from the collaboration of various parties, from building managers, business actors, communities, to residents who participated in turning off lights and unused electronic devices during the action.
When millions of residents take the same small steps consistently, the impact will be enormous for Jakarta’s environmental quality. Protecting the earth and providing cleaner air is not only the government’s task, but a joint movement of the entire community.
The blackout action was carried out on Saturday (13/6) at a number of strategic points and icons of Jakarta, including the National Monument (Monas), the Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, the Welcome Statue at the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout (HI), the Pemuda Statue, the General Sudirman Statue, and the DKI Jakarta City Hall area.
