JAKARTA — The one-hour power outage action during the Earth Hour commemoration in 2026 at PT Pertamina Patra Niaga’s refinery environment demonstrated a real impact on energy efficiency and emission reduction.

The event, held on Saturday (29/3/2026) from 20:30 to 21:30 local time, was carried out simultaneously across various refinery operations, from Dumai, Plaju, Cilacap, Balikpapan, Balongan to Kasim.

“Pertamina Patra Niaga, particularly in the refinery environment, has been implementing Earth Hour activities for several years. The aim is to continuously remind the importance of energy-saving behaviour for workers, business partners, and families,” said Corporate Secretary of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, Roberth M.V. Dumatubun.

Earth Hour itself is a global movement initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), encouraging the public to turn off unnecessary lights and electrical devices as a symbol of concern for climate change.

He explained that the activity managed to save approximately 9 MW of electricity, reduce emissions by around 6 tons of CO2 equivalent, and save energy equivalent to more than 2,000 litres of fuel oil.

“Earth Hour, commemorated every year, becomes an important momentum to increase awareness of the importance of a sustainable lifestyle,” said Roberth.

“Energy savings, carbon emission reduction, and environmental care are the main goals of this movement,” he continued.

According to him, this impact shows that simple steps can have a significant effect if done collectively and consistently.

He stated that behavioural changes in daily energy use are the main key to sustainability.

“Simple steps like turning off lights when not in use, using energy-efficient equipment, and wisely using energy can help preserve the earth,” said Roberth.

He also hopes that this activity can serve as an example for the wider community to adopt energy-saving habits, not just for one hour, but sustainably.

“The Earth Hour commemoration is just a symbolisation. However, the most important thing is that energy-saving behaviour must become our daily culture, and it must start as early as possible,” said Roberth.

“We also appreciate the public who have made efforts to save energy and use energy reasonably without panic buying,” he concluded.
