One down, but gang gets away with gold

BOGOR: Angry locals caught two of six men who robbed gold trader Nana in Rumpin district, Bogor, on Wednesday afternoon, but the other four managed to flee with 4 kilograms of gold jewelry and Rp 20 million (US$2,247) in cash.

One of the two, Yan Rahman, 27, was beaten to death, while Deni, 28, remains in a critical condition.

Nana was on his way home with his son, Ajat, 23, after closing their store in Gobang market at about 4:30 p.m., when six men on three motorcycles stopped their car. Putting sickles around the victims' necks, the robbers took their belongings.

Locals chased them and managed to stop Deni and Yan.

The four also took a motorcycle taxi belonged to Jajang, a resident, and left one of theirs.

The police have seized the motorcycle and the weapons left by the robbers as evidence. -- JP
