One died, 106 treated for food poisoning
JAKARTA (JP): An 11-year-old girl died and 106 people suffered
from serious stomach aches after consuming a meal served at an
orphan house in a special program held by a private foundation on
Sunday in Cibubur, East Jakarta.
Yulianti, the only fatality, and most of the other victims
were orphans.
Although the food was consumed on Sunday, the effect was not
detected until the next day, according to a police officer who
asked not to be identified.
The program was held by a local non-profit organization called
Yayasan Sos Desa Taruna and Ria Pembangunan, a socially active
women's organization whose members are primarily wives of high-
ranking officers.
The 106 victims are currently being treated at a number of
hospitals in the city, including the Cipto Mangunkusumo general
hospital (27 patients), Carolus hospital (25), Pasar Rebo
hospital (30), Bunda Asih hospital (seven), Kramat Jati police
hospital (nine) and Harapan Bunda (seven).
Material evidence, including boiled rice, sauce and fried
chicken, has been taken and several witnesses, including the
chief organizer, AY Wiyono, have been questioned.
Several noted figures, including representatives of Ria
Pembangunan, have visited the victims at the hospitals. (bsr)
