One Debt Collector Suspect in Ponjong, Gunungkidul, Not Detained — Here's Why

Three individuals involved in a debt collection fracas in Ponjong, Gunungkidul, have been named as suspects. One person was not detained because the assault was deemed minor.

The Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at the Gunungkidul Police Resort, AKP Tri Hartanto, told reporters on Thursday (11/6/2026) that police had initially secured five people, and following an investigation and case conference, three were designated as suspects.

Tri identified the suspect in the assault case as S (42), a resident of Karangmojo, Gunungkidul. The other two suspects, charged with carrying sharp weapons, are T (48), a resident of Semin, Gunungkidul, and A (37), a resident of Wedi, Klaten.

“One was not detained, the one in the assault case, because it was a minor assault that did not disrupt the victim’s daily activities. The suspects in the sharp weapons case have all been detained,” he stated.

Despite not being detained, legal proceedings against suspect S are ongoing. The three suspects are charged under Article 307, paragraph 1 of Law of the Republic of Indonesia No. 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code.

“The maximum penalty is seven years in prison,” he said.

As previously reported, police named three suspects in connection with a disturbance over a debt issue in Ponjong. The three suspects are implicated in two separate cases: assault and the carrying of sharp weapons.

Elaborating further, the suspect in the assault case has the initials S. The motive was that the victim was one instalment short on a smartphone payment. “The motive is that the victim bought a mobile phone in 24 instalments and was short one instalment of Rp 350,000. S is someone who frequently lends money to people,” he explained.

For the two suspects in the sharp weapons case, T was carrying a sickle as a precaution, while A was carrying four swords and a stick, also as a precautionary measure.
