One Dead, Two Injured in Maumere Following NTT Earthquake
One person died and two others were injured after a magnitude 7 earthquake struck East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) at a depth of 30 km northeast of Mbay-Nagekeo on Saturday (15/8).
In a written statement from the Maumere Basarnas Office, it was stated that the fatalities and injuries were caused by collapsing buildings.
“We received information that when the earthquake occurred, a building at Lauren Say Port in Maumere-Sikka collapsed and struck one victim, Meliana Nenong, a 54-year-old woman, who died,” said Head of the Maumere SAR Office Fathur Rahman in his written statement.
The body, along with two injured victims, was immediately evacuated to TC Hillers Maumere Regional General Hospital.
Data collection is still ongoing. Fathur said the SAR Team has also headed to other affected locations to carry out evacuations.
BNPB recorded two people dead as a result of the earthquake. It is not yet known whether the victim in Maumere is included in the report to BNPB.
The M7 earthquake shook NTT and was felt in several surrounding areas. The earthquake also triggered tsunamis in several places with heights ranging from 0.3 metres to nearly 1 metre.
However, the tsunami early warning has now been declared over.
