One Dead in Clash Between Residents and Group in Menteng, Central Jakarta

A clash between residents and a group of men on Jalan Tambak, Menteng, Central Jakarta, has left one person dead. A resident who witnessed the incident said the confrontation began when a member of the group failed to pay for nasi uduk on Jalan Matraman Dalam.

“So at first it was like this: someone was selling food, and then a man from Ambon supposedly bought nasi uduk but didn’t pay and ran off. He was chased off by the seller’s son — he just barged in like that. Then the man from Ambon came back here unhappy, and they overturned the nasi uduk cart,” said Yafa when met at the scene on Sunday (26/7/2026).

Yafa said the nasi uduk vendor on Jalan Matraman Dalam was a local resident who had been trading in the area for a long time, whereas the buyer, in his account, was new to the neighbourhood.

Yafa witnessed the trouble unfold after the nasi uduk cart was damaged by the group. Local residents then stepped in to help the vendor.

“It was quite a commotion, and other buyers helped set things right — the spices and food had been knocked over, so they tidied it all up,” he explained.

However, a clash with the group could not be avoided, as the emotions of local residents boiled over. Yafa saw several members of the group being dragged by residents towards Jalan Tambak.

“They were dragged out front, onto the street. The ones from Ambon were dragged over there. Basically, they were set upon,” he added.

According to Yafa, the group that sparked the unrest was only known to him this time. “No, this is probably the first time they’ve caused trouble here,” he said.

Earlier, the clash on Jalan Tambak, Menteng, Central Jakarta, resulted in one death. One person died after being taken to hospital following the brawl.

“The latest information is that two people secured from the crime scene were in critical condition when they were taken away, but at the hospital one of them had passed away,” said the Head of Criminal Investigation at Central Jakarta Police Resort, AKBP Roby Heri Saputra, speaking to journalists at the scene on Sunday (26/7/2026).

Roby explained that police received a report from residents at around 10.00 Western Indonesia Time about a disturbance involving a group and local residents. Police responded by deploying Brimob to the location.

“Of the casualties we secured from the crime scene, two people were taken to RSCM, and from the residents involved — there were two groups, one group of six people and two people from the outside group — we are currently securing them and taking their statements at Menteng Police Station,” he said.
