One dead in car crash

BANDUNG, West Java: This year's annual exodus of Idul Fitri travelers claimed one more life on Thursday, when a Suzuki Futura car collided with a Kijang van on the Padaleunyi toll road in Bandung.

Twelve people were seriously and slightly injured in the crash which took place at 7:15 a.m. when the Futura slammed into the rear of the Kijang while it was stopped on the left side of the street while its driver was resting.

M. Gunawan, who was seated in the back of the Kijang, carrying passengers to Cirebon, was killed instantly. He was a resident from Karangtengah village in Karangsembung subdistrict, Cirebon.

Officials of state toll road operator PT Jasa Marga said the crash took place because the driver of Futura, identified only as Abun, fell asleep at the wheel and lost control of his vehicle.

Earlier on Monday, eleven people were killed when a bus carrying Idul Fitri travelers to Central Java collided with a truck in Subang, West Java. --Antara
