JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The government is finalising plans to implement work from home (WFH) for one day per week as part of efforts to enhance work efficiency.

However, this policy will not apply to all sectors, but only to specific fields that allow for remote work implementation.

“I need to clarify that it will apply to certain sectors. So as not to be misunderstood. For example, the services, industry, and trade sectors may not be part of this policy,” said Prasetyo, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Saturday (21/3/2026).

Prasetyo explained that the proposal for WFH one day per week is a direct directive from Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto during a plenary cabinet meeting.

This policy is part of the government’s efforts to improve efficiency in the work system, particularly within the government environment.

He stated that this policy provides an opportunity for the government to evaluate and improve the work system to make it more effective and efficient.

He assured that the national fuel supply condition remains safe.

“It does not mean there is a problem with the fuel supply. As we have continuously stated, insyaallah the fuel supply is not problematic, the fuel supply is secure,” he said.

A few days earlier, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto mentioned that the WFH policy is being prepared as a response to the high global oil prices due to conflicts in the Middle East region.

“Regarding the study that with the high oil prices, efficiency in work time is needed, where flexibility for work from home will be opened,” said Airlangga after a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Palace Complex, Jakarta, on Thursday (19/3/2026).

According to him, the government is preparing the technical implementation of the policy, including the possibility of its application not only to civil servants (ASN), but also to private sector workers and regional government employees.

Airlangga added that the plan has the potential to be implemented after Eid al-Fitr 2026, although the exact implementation time will still be determined.
