One Car to the Airport: Prabowo and Anwar Ibrahim's Closeness in the Spotlight
The brief visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to Jakarta concluded with a gesture rarely seen in state protocol. Prabowo Subianto did not merely see off his guest but personally accompanied him all the way to the TNI AU Halim Perdanakusuma Base on Friday (27/3).
After the meeting at Merdeka Palace, the two were seen walking together towards the vehicle while engaging in casual conversation. The relaxed atmosphere was reinforced by the playing of the song Rasa Sayange once again, adding a familiar touch amid the official agenda.
What stood out was Prabowo’s choice to travel in the same vehicle as Anwar to Halim. This decision marked a personal closeness that transcends formal inter-state relations.
Upon arriving at the air base, the farewell procession took place with an honour guard. However, the atmosphere remained warm as the two leaders bid each other goodbye at the foot of the aircraft stairs.
Several officials were present to see him off, including Foreign Minister Sugiono, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
The parting moment concluded with hand waves exchanged between Prabowo at the bottom of the aircraft stairs and Anwar from the aircraft door. This simple gesture became a symbol of a relationship that is not only diplomatic but also personal.
Around 7:20 PM WIB, the aircraft carrying Anwar and his entourage took off, ending the brief but meaningful Eid al-Fitr visit.
Amid regional dynamics, such interactions demonstrate that Indonesia-Malaysia relations are built not only at the negotiating table but also through the closeness among leaders, which has the potential to facilitate communication in the future.
