One by one, regional health services are being fulfilled
Pesisir Barat is not a district that often features in national conversations. The regency, located at the western tip of Lampung facing the Indian Ocean, lies far from the main pulse of the economy.
Its remote location means access to referral health services has not always been easy. Until now, residents requiring advanced treatment had to travel more than three hours to reach the nearest type B hospital.
However, on Wednesday (10/6), a different atmosphere was palpable in Krui, the capital of Pesisir Barat Regency. The usually quiet area was suddenly packed with tight security and protocol arrangements following the arrival of President Prabowo Subianto.
President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated the KH Muhammad Thohir Regional General Hospital in Krui, the only advanced referral hospital in Lampung Province included in the government’s health Quick Win programme or the Fast Best Results Programme (PHTC).
The inauguration marked the end of the physical construction process that began with a groundbreaking ceremony on 13 June 2025. The project, funded by the 2025 state budget amounting to IDR 152.98 billion, was completed in December of the same year.
The changes are not only visible in the new building. The hospital’s status has been upgraded from type D to type C, a leap that demands the availability of basic specialist doctors and various supporting services that were previously unavailable.
Inpatient bed capacity has increased from 59 to 101 units. Various facilities that were once difficult for the community to access are now present in Krui, ranging from an emergency department (IGD), outpatient polyclinics, ICU/ICVCU, a haemodialysis unit, to radiology and laboratory services.
The strengthening of services is also set to continue. In 2026, the hospital is scheduled to receive additional equipment in the form of a 64-slice CT scanner, mammography, and ventilators. A year later, a cathlab and echocardiography facilities will complete the available health service capabilities.
On the occasion, President Prabowo conveyed the government’s plan to build, improve, and renovate 300 to 400 hospitals in various districts across Indonesia within the next three years. The programme will also be accompanied by the distribution of nearly 1,000 units of modern medical devices to regional hospitals.
Yet, in the world of health services, the presence of new buildings and sophisticated equipment is only part of the answer. Ultimately, the quality of service is determined not only by technology, but also by the availability of health workers who are able to operate and utilise it optimally.
