The South Jakarta administration is building an office for the
city parks agency in a green area of Jl. Barito II, Kramat Pela
subdistrict, formerly known as Barito park. An artesian well is
also under construction as part of the building.

In this context, citizens of Barito and its environs deem it
necessary to question Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso, whether a city
park agency office should be located in the middle of South
Jakarta when its limited green areas are required for more public
parks. The massive new office of the South Jakarta mayor in the
TPU-Blok P area should be adequate enough to house the office.

The next question is whether the artesian well in this
settlement area is justified, because it will disturb the flow of
underground water for nearby households. As the project seems to
be hastily thought out to be completed by the end of the current
fiscal year, one may wonder whether it is in line with the city's
development master plan or merely a means to spend the available
budget.

This project has also removed a basketball field, where local
children and students used to play. Governor Sutiyoso, who
promised to build a lot of public parks in Jakarta as a habitat
for various song birds, should occasionally visit the once shady
and now increasing barren Barito area.
