Once Anxious About Flooding With Every Rainfall, Atun Now Receives House Renovation Assistance
Jakarta—A house renovation programme in Serdang Village, Kemayoran District, Central Jakarta, on Monday (16 March 2026) has brought fresh hope to Atun, 73 years old.
The housewife was among the recipients of home renovation assistance through a programme initiated by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government.
Atun recounted that her 30-square-metre home was frequently flooded whenever rain fell. This situation had constantly filled her with worry and anxiety.
Beyond the flooding, the deteriorating condition of her roof compounded her concerns. She feared the roof might collapse at any moment, particularly during heavy rain accompanied by strong winds.
As a result, whenever rain fell, Atun admitted she never truly felt at ease within her home.
Observing her plight, the local neighbourhood association leaders then nominated Atun’s house for inclusion in the renovation programme. The proposal was eventually approved, and the home, which housed four people, was renovated.
“I was registered so my house could be renovated, and it finally was,” Atun said. “I stayed in a rented place while my house was being fixed, and the rented house also experienced flooding.”
After the repairs, Atun’s home has been elevated to a higher level than before. The floor, which was previously only cement, has been replaced. The front of the house has been painted in bright colours combining yellow and cream.
On the lower section of the walls and roof, the exterior has been painted green with a serrated pattern resembling the “gigi balang” motif, a characteristic Betawi ornament frequently found on traditional houses in Jakarta.
On the façade are two windows with white frames and a white main door that appears newly installed.
