Once Again, Trump Refers to Canada as the '51st State'
US President Donald Trump has once again referred to Canada as the ‘51st state’. This statement recalls Trump’s ambitions to annex Canada and incorporate it as the 51st state of the US. Such ideas have been repeatedly voiced by the US President since his return to the White House in early January 2025.
Trump’s latest remark, as reported by TIME and CTV News on Wednesday (3/6/2026), was made on Monday night (1/6). The President shared an article from the prominent US media outlet Bloomberg, which stated that Canada has entered a ‘technical recession’ for the first time since 2020.
“51st state!” Trump wrote briefly in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, commenting on the Bloomberg article titled “Canada Dips Into Technical Recession for First Time Since 2020”. Trump’s post was subsequently reshared by the US Ambassador to Canada, Pete Hoekstra.
Comments have emerged from high-ranking Canadian officials, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who provided a harsh response. “I cannot believe I have to say this again, but Canada will never be the 51st state. Canada is not for sale,” he asserted in a post on X on Tuesday (2/6).
Canadian Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre also rejected Trump’s comments, telling reporters that the idea of Canada becoming the 51st US state is “ridiculous and will never happen”. Poilievre added that “ridiculous comments” such as Trump’s should not distract from the “real suffering experienced by Canadians as a result of the domestic Liberal Party’s policies”.
Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, speaking to journalists on Tuesday (2/6) afternoon, described Trump as a “very active social media user” and stated that the Canadian federal government would not respond to every one of his posts.
