On May Day, DJSN and BPJS Ketenagakerjaan Emphasise the Importance of Real Protection for All Workers

On the occasion of International Labour Day or May Day, DJSN member Royanto Purba, along with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan’s Director of Finance and Risk Management, Bambang Joko Sutarto, made a direct visit to the victims of the KRL and Argo Bromo train accident who are currently undergoing treatment at Bekasi General Hospital. This visit serves as a demonstration of empathy, concern, and the state’s commitment to ensuring that employment social security protection is truly present and felt by workers, especially when facing unexpected risks. During the occasion, DJSN and BPJS Ketenagakerjaan representatives expressed their deepest condolences to the victims and their families. They also prayed for the victims undergoing treatment to be granted swift recovery, strength, and the ability to reunite with their families. DJSN member Royanto Purba stated that the May Day momentum serves as a reminder to all parties that worker protection must be ensured from the outset through active participation in employment social security programmes. “My fellow DJSN members and I visited today as part of our oversight role; we are external supervisors, observing how the social security system truly operates, from the provision of benefits to ensuring patients receive care in accordance with their rights. Our presence at the hospital is a form of empathy as well as a manifestation of the state’s role in providing protection to workers,” said Royanto. Royanto expressed gratitude for BPJS Ketenagakerjaan’s prompt actions, from the central office, regional office, and branches, which have provided attention to the treatment of participants affected by the accident right from the start of the incident. “On this Labour Day, I hope that business owners recognise the importance of employment social security. In the event of an accident like this, it does not disrupt the company financially because the employee’s medical treatment is covered by BPJS Ketenagakerjaan; even if the employee is unable to work for a year, it is not the company that pays the monthly wages, but rather the benefits from BPJS Ketenagakerjaan. I hope that labour unions are also active in ensuring that our colleagues in the company are registered as BPJS Ketenagakerjaan participants,” Royanto explained.
