On Limiting Party Leaders to Two Terms, Cak Imin: The Law Still Provides Flexibility
Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment Muhaimin Iskandar, or Cak Imin, believes that the law still provides flexibility regarding the tenure of political party general chairmen. This opinion was expressed by Cak Imin in response to the KPK’s proposal to limit the tenure of party leaders to a maximum of two terms. “Yes, it’s a good proposal. But the law still provides flexibility,” said Cak Imin when met at the BP Jamsostek Plaza, Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Monday (27/04/2026). Furthermore, Cak Imin stated that the election of party chairmen is conducted openly. He described this as a democratic process. The KPK proposes limiting the tenure of political party general chairmen to a maximum of two management terms. This proposal was submitted by the KPK’s Monitoring Directorate in its study on political party governance, which found that there is no integrated standard for cadre development systems. “To ensure the implementation of cadre development, regulations are needed to limit the leadership of the party general chairman to a maximum of two terms,” stated the KPK’s Monitoring Directorate on Wednesday (22/4/2026). The KPK also proposes that the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) develop standardisation and an integrated cadre development reporting system for political parties linked to political party assistance funds (banpol). The KPK also proposes several additions to the revision of Article 29 of Law No. 2 of 2011 on Political Parties, namely regarding political party membership in Article 29 paragraph (1) letter a, adding that political party members consist of youth, intermediate, and senior members.
