Jakarta – Golongan Karya (Golkar) party has commented on the implementation of an e-voting system in the 2029 general election. Ahmad Doli Kurnia, Deputy Chairman of Golkar’s Central Executive Board, stated that whilst e-voting could be implemented, it must first be resolved through amendments to the Electoral Law.

“This is part of the issues we need to address in the revision of the Electoral Law,” he said at Golkar’s Central Executive Board office in Central Jakarta on Monday, 1 June 2026.

In its implementation, Doli assessed that the e-voting system represents an advancement towards a more efficient and modern electoral system. The system is also considered capable of facilitating greater public participation in elections.

“The essence is using digital or electronic systems at electoral stages to make it easier for the public,” he explained.

Furthermore, Doli revealed that implementing digitally-based elections could significantly reduce the cost of the democratic process. In addition, technological advancement makes elections more transparent and accountable.

“We hope that if a digital or electronic system is used, it will be transparent and accountable,” he said.

However, Doli noted that several prerequisites must be met by the state to ensure the system operates effectively, including infrastructure requirements.

“Internet network infrastructure, for example, we still have much work to do. Let alone internet networks, even electricity networks are still inadequate,” he remarked.

Furthermore, cybersecurity demands attention, as several countries that began using such systems have since abandoned them due to hacking vulnerabilities.

Therefore, the government must prepare thoroughly to prevent hacking during the conduct of elections using this digital system.

“If we implement this in 2029 or whenever, we must fulfil a rather lengthy set of prerequisites – infrastructure, digital culture and literacy,” he concluded.
